NGOs in India for Children Education

“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” – Mahatma Gandhi
According to the definition by the World Bank, NGOs refers to not-for profit organizations that pursue activities to relieve suffering, promote the interests of the poor, protect the environment, provide basic social services or undertake community development. In India, the term NGO include a wide spectrum of organizations which may be non-governmental, quasi or semi-governmental, voluntary or non-voluntary etc.

Since independence, India has achieved economic growth in various sectors. However, the issues of exclusion of women, children still remains. Everyday, the news channels are filled with incidents of exploitation and oppression of the underprivileged groups.

Non-profit organizations play a vital role in mobilizing public attention to societal problems and needs. They are the principal vehicle through which communities can give voice to their concerns. One such non- profit organization is Lakshyam.

Lakshyam was founded in 2012 by a young social entrepreneur, Ms. Raashi Anand to contribute towards betterment of the society with a focus on child education, holistic child development and women empowerment.  To work in this direction, Lakshyam has two centres, Sindhi Basti in Vasant Kunj and Arthala in Ghaziabad. In these two centres, the children are given a conducive environment thus, providing them freedom to foster creativity and curiosity.

In these centres, lakshyam as an NGO works for the holistic development of the children and provide them with all the basic necessities and basic education required for their advancement. it tries to pull the children who are involved in various professions like rag picking, begging, toy selling and shoe polishing along with kids who are drop outs or have never been to school to our centres in Vasant Kunj and Arthala, Ghaziabad.

One such programme which Lakshyam has launched for the welfare of the children is Butterfly. Butterfly is a symbol of freedom- freedom from the clutches of inequality and child labour

Butterfly - Child Welfare and Education programme was established to provide comprehensive assistance to impoverished and underprivileged children through a learning programme. The children here are provided tutorials free of cost in subjects like Hindi, English and Mathematics. Furthermore, children are provided care in all aspects ranging from sanitation to child healthcare. It also creates various recreational activities such as dancing competitions, puppet shows etc. Lakshyam tries to help children reach till 5th standard as that has become a mandate for all the skill-based programmes.

Lakshyam through its various initiatives has improved the lives of children to a great extent. Various volunteering programmes organized by Lakshyam for these children allow the children to develop in a holistic manner, become aware and face all the problems on the face of the earth.
